Default Head Gasket Replacement

I am Gearing up to replace my head gaskets. I was told by the Land Rover shop they were leaking. I am pretty excited about it believe it or not. I have the rave manual and a bit of know how. I was just wondering if anyone had any tips or tricks?

new head bolts for sure...

Might do new wires if you don't have Magnacors on yet.

Don't be afraid to take pics, you'll be a hero.

Clean everything, remember, it's alum - no scratchy

Ditto on the new head bolts.

Does this apply to the DI as well?

Make sure you blow out all the oil and anti-freeze in the head bolt holes in the block. When you clean the surfaces just use a razor and srape it, heads, block, intake, etc. Another good way is get a flat piece of something, wood, metal, and put a scotch brite pad on it and give the surfaces a rub down with that. When you put the head gaskets on make sure the surfaces are real clean and free of oil and anti freeze. Get some Right-stuff sealant and put a very SMALL amount along the front and back edges of the gasket, both sides top and bottom. a line about 1/16 of an inch wide. the more you put on the more that will squeeze out. Ive done a whole bunch of them that way, including my own and 30k miles later I dont have a drop of anything coming from my top end. Good luck. got any questions hit me up.

Be really careful using metal around sealing surfaces. The head and block both are aluminum and will gouge easily.

Take pictures of your engine at different angles before disassembly, it will help your to remember where all the hoses and stuff go when you put it back together. When you put the valley pan gasket back on coat both rubber gaskets that go on the front and back with RTF before install or they will leak. Did mine last August and not to bad of a job.
