Default Head Gasket Replacement

Hey all, so I just tore down my engine for a head gasket replacement job.
The symptoms that told me I needed to operate were...

1) needed to add coolant all the time
2) rough idle
3) sloshing sound in the passenger side dash (air in the coolant system)
4) watery/oily soot spraying from the exhaust

also my check engine light was on (in addition to the the SVS and 3 amigos...but that will have to be addressed another day)

I took it in to the dealer to have a full diagnosis of the problem and they said I needed new front o2 sensors and new head gaskets.

Also my throttle body heater plate shows signs of a small leak but nothing significant.

To fix all this they wanted about 4 G's. I laughed in the guys face, drove it home, and downloaded the RAVE manual.

I purchased, the AB gasket kit, new head bolts, magnecore 8mm wires, Bosch +4 pluggs, and a thermostat for the rebuild.

I now have the heads off and at the shop for cleaning/resurfacing. But I have a few questions..

What would cause the whole right head to have much more carbon buildup around the bottom of the valves than the left head?

take a look at the pictures of the gaskets and heads, I did not see any obvious gaskets failure points except between the water jacket and the outside of the engine. However, this appeared to be true for both gaskets and does not explain the carbon buildup on just the right head.

Any feedback is appreciated.

IMHO it would might be difficult (but not impossible) to get it to run rich on one bank only. But the HG steam cleaning could account for one side being cleaner - they probably would both look like "the dark side" if the HG had not failed.

x2 - I'm guessing by the look of the spark plugs that is exactly what happened. Steam Cleaning on one side.

Default Head gasket rebuild

Help. I recently rebuilt the heads on my disco 2 now I can't start it. I got the following error codes.
P1668*Immobilizer signal - CAN data bus, wiring open circuit.
P1551
IACV closing coil malfunction
Open circuit - closing winding

P1514*Neutral Drive Load Fault
P0560 battery below minimum fault
P0650 Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) Control Circuit Malfunction

I reset the error codes and stil no start. What am I doing wrong is there something that I missed or did I forget to do something. Help how do I get this thing to kick over. Everything is back together as per spec in rave manual.

Sounds like you may just have a low battery, how old is the battery, did it sit a while when you were doing the head job?

OK heres an update..

Finished the HG job. started her up and she ran, much better than before HOWEVER...

check engine light turned off, then 1 minute later turned back on. The rough idle seemed to go away at first but intermittently came back after driving it around for a while, still not as bad as before.

While driving it around the check engine light is intermittently flashing at me, and I know that's a cat killer. I Immediately took it to auto-zone to pull the codes

P1509 (not sure?)
P0134 (oxy bank 1 sensor 1 no activity)
P1300 (not sure?)
P0305 (cyl 5 misfire)
P0307 (cyl 7 misfire)
P1319 (fuel related?)
P0300 (multiple misfire)
P0301 (cyl 1 misfire)
P0303 (cyl 3 misfire)
P0304 (cyl 4 misfire)
P0135 (oxy sensor heater bank 1 sensor 1)
P0155 (oxy sensor heater bank 2 sensor 1)
P0159 (oxy sensor circuit slow bank 2 sensor 2)

The basterds at autozone wouldn't clear my codes because of some kind of legality. I replaced my spark plugs, and wires, so these misfires are scaring me.

When i got home from auto-zone i did notice that my bank 1 sensor 1 O2 sensor was not plugged in all the way, so i'm sure that will address at least ONE of those codes.

Here are some thoughts...

1) Is it possible that the misfires are related to the O2 sensor not being plugged in?(which i will fix tomorrow)

2) since the fuel rails were drained of fuel on the teardown, do they need running time to purge the air, and that could be causing the misfires?

3) I'm ashamed to admit that as a poor-*** college student I ran cheap gas for about 6 months up to the point of this job. So will running good gas plus injector cleaner also fix this problem? what about sea-foam?

Tomorrow Im going to find a way to clear the codes and make sure all multi-plugs are together.. but holy jebus what have I done to my rover!

You may want to give seafoam a shot. Running regular gas, especially for that long is a big no no. That will dirty your engine and also make it run hotter, and these aluminum engines already get hot enough.

How many of your O2's have you replaced?

put some cheap auto lite plugs with the right gap might fix your misfire problems...I never had any luck with the bosh plugs....
