True, but Will's heads arrive machined with new valve seals, ready to install on the engine. Which is easier than finding a machine shop, having them do the work, hoping they do a good job, etc.

Those pictures are a testament to the complexity of the job. What kind of cleaning agent do you use to get everything looking so shiny and clean? Especially those pistons.

 

there has to be someone local that can deck your heads, were not talk rocket science here.

While extremely helpful, the pics and walkthroughs make it look much more daunting than it is.

You are basically dealing with:

- 30 or so bolts
- 2 brackets
- the intake
- the pushrods
- the heads

I did find a place in Tyler, about 45 minutes away. I'll try the place in Longview first. My Google search didn't come up with anything local. Garbage in garage out probably.

So I'll do the heads right.

So let me ask another question back to my original post. My spare engine overheated badly. Ex wife was f driving it and drove it til is absolutely quit. When I got there turning the motor resulted in gushing antifreeze from the overflow. The Rover sat for 6 years in my garage. That engine had no other issues and had about 100k on it at the time. My replacement engine has about 140k on it and has a very loud ticking once it warms up when I think is a loose liner. I can do an engine swap in a weekend. Unfortunately my old engine was poorly stored. Plugs out for years. Any tips on which engine to use? I really don't want to do a bottom end on the replacement engine because I am bidding on diesel engines as we speak. Just need a few months.

And to the comment about the HG replacement being easier than it sounds I hope and expect so. Most of the repairs I have done seemed really easy once I got my tools out and stood in front of it.

 

I did the head gaskets in a parking lot in Boulder Colorado.
Much of the work was at night.
I used the rover battery and an inverter and a trouble light.

I had never had the heads machined. I just put them back on.

Cleaned it with two cans of spray carb cleaner and paper towels and a brass brush.
Use the brash brush very very lightly.

This took about 2 weeks as I did it part time and first time on a Land Rover II.

That was one year 9 months ago.
I have gone 10,000 miles now on the new head gaskets.
About 500 to 600 engine starts maybe.
And no problems yet.
I never had the heads checked. I just put them back on.
