Default Head Unit Options?

Hey guys! It’s that time I guess. Im ready to upgrade from the factory D2 head unit so I can get Bluetooth and apple car play. I was wondering if there were any headunits you guys reccomend? I would prefer one that could incorporate the steering wheel controls and the 6 disc CD changer. Any suggestions? I’m considering high price point options as well. Thanks!!

Note that it's highly unlikely that you're going to be able to retain the CD player and add modern connections though.

I’m really happy with the Pioneer DMH-WT7600NEX. No CD’s and you won’t miss them! Apple CarPlay works great along with backup camera.
no modification of dash needed.

So although I like the bigger screens and such, I don’t like how much space they take up. Back when I got my first Disco, I got a Pioneer DEH-X8800BHS. Dirt cheap I think, and feature rich. I ran one in 2 Discos and even put one in our RV. I think that unit was extremely popular, but the bummer is I can’t find the anywhere and look to be on perpetual back order at Crutchfield.

The changer still works in the OEM unit in mine and even the single disc works some times. It’s the Uber cool, but totally useless Nav unit.

Back on the big screens. It’s not that often I need nav and I actually dislike touch screens (I love that my S4 has a scroll wheel and not a touch screen- thus why I don’t want one any newer), and I don’t like how obtrusive the big screens are. Pioneer has a cool unit that only pops out when you want the screen, but if not there are a number of controls in a single DIN configuration. However, that is $700, and I can’t really justify that for a vehicle that is very far from a daily driver. Also, my phone works just fine and has a plenty large screen and if I have a need for a larger screen, I have an oldish iPad mini that I’ve dedicated to navigation, and for both have a very simple and stable RAM mount for. Either way, my phone is always connected so, meh. Also, I’ll buck a lot of trends and say I don’t care for CarPlay (I don’t use it in the Audi either).

So like you, I’m kinda at square one. But I have so many other fish to fry, it’s not that high on the priority list.

I’ve installed a pioneer sph-evo64, fits nice in the dashboard! See my youtube movie;
unfortunately the radio died and is being repaired at the moment, you get a good idea how it looks

steering wheel control works although you need a converter.

My Pioneer AVH-3500NEX. I love the backup camera, especially for offroading to keep an eye on my buddies behind me or when backing up on tight trails.

If you want to keep the 6 cd disc changer then just look at getting a grom audio adapter and a Scosche magic mount for your phone; worked well for me for years. Recently I updated to the boss audio be7acp-sd since I too wanted carplay, cameras, etc but now my SO complains about the lack of tuning dial and to be honest it was a huge amount of integration work for small benefit.
