Default Headlight downgrade

I have a D2 04 and want to replace the headlights for the pre-lift version. Has anyone tried this? have a documented procedure for it? How much work would that entail?

Would be significantly more difficult than the reverse. You'll need to go find head light brackets at a junkyard and cut them out cleanly in a way you could reinstall them in your vehicle. It will likely not be pretty nor simple. I've upgraded one of my pre lift d2s to a facelift housing and it was more tedious than difficult.

What is your objective for this modification?

Having had both, there's zero perceptible difference in lighting quality between the two, but at least with the glass ones, they're plentiful on the used market, you don't have to keep fighting the plastic fogging/haze issue, and at least IMO, they look better.

Agreed about the plastic hazing, but it seems like a lot of work for "eh" benefit. But, to each his own.

Still hope to hear from the OP about his objective(s).

The big downside of the glass lights though are that the lenses can’t take a rock without shattering. The same can’t be said of the plastic ones. I haven’t broken one yet, thankfully, but also have a back stock of four pairs should it ever happen haha.

merely aesthetic, I don’t haveanything against the facelift lights, it’s just in my opinion the pre-lift look so much better and preserve the essence of the disco. I would dare to describe the facelift as a Range Rover “wanna be” move from ford at the time, the pre-lift headlights pay tribute to the discovery legacy. If you think about it and look at what our beloved Disdovery end up looking like today, you would see my point.

i really want to get the modification done, if someone has any video, document or any other resource kindly share.

and no, selling my beautiful 04 with only 62k miles and no rust whatsoever is not an option 🤣

Thanks

That’s a fair assessment. I don’t mind the “face lift” look, but every generation of Disco after the D2 seems to lose some of the classic LR look.

The ability to retrofit a projector HID headlight into the facelift is reason enough to keep them and get a real lighting upgrade. That is something that can't be done in a pre-lift housing (not impossible but would need a non-fluted glass housing which I have not been able to find).

I guess I’m the only freak who is thinking of a headlight downgrade 😖
