Headliner Replacement - Where To Stop Prep
So I took the plunge and started my headliner repair tonight. I pulled it out in about an hour then started in on the foam with the wire brush. It came right off, but beneath the foam is a green felt with thin black felt/foam behind it which is attached to the fiberglass headliner shell. Most of the green felt was glued down pretty well but some areas had started to lift. I pulled those areas up and a bunch more peeled off also but now I'm not sure if I need to get it all off or if some can stay. Has anybody run into this?
Here's a few pictures of what I found. The fabric fell right off, then the foam brushed off without much effort at all. Below that was what seemed to be a green felt, but if I peeled that off there was a non-woven black polyester fiber material. It was folded into the headliner in some areas so it was probably placed in the mold with the fiberglass when the shell was formed. I wanted to get the thing finished so I pulled off whatever I could and figured if it couldn't be pulled off it wasn't coming off. Trying to scrub off the black stuff started to break down the fiberglass. I sprayed it with the adhesive and put on the headliner material and called it good. If it comes apart in a few years, I'll just do it over. It actually looks great, although I haven't taken any pictures of it in the truck yet.
I'm planning on doing this in the future. But I'm curious if your headliner had been redone in the past, and that was what you were seeing? Just a thought. Was it hard to remove and replace the headliner?
Not sure if it had been redone. If it was, they used the same crappy materials and glue as the factory so I doubt it.
The headliner came out in about an hour. It was pretty easy and the results are worth it. I got the material and 2 cans of spray adhesive from WLS Headliners for about $110 delivered.
