in good condition (good engine) your truck is valued at $7300, you owe $7000.
Now you can throw in a flanged motor for another $7000, so now you own a truck worth $7300 but you one it for $14000. Where does the math work? even Bush's fuzzy math doesn't work with this one.

even with a used motor it just doesn't add up.

 

Its still a $40k SUV whether you got it for 30% of new or 15% of new.

Nowhere can you get a the same quality for $14k or 7k.

Used Xterra? Not... Used Jeep? Not. Used Hummer? Nope.

Even if you put $7k more into it you would still have a vehicle far better than what 14k would buy on the used car market, resale value be damned if you love it.

14k would buy you any vehicle better than a D2, reliability-wise, and in parts availability (both aftermarket and oem). I love the D2, and wouldn't want any other truck (okay, maybe a kitted d90), but realistically speaking, yeah, the D2 is a turd, it looks better than any other, but that's it imo. Its a Land Rovers Enthusiasts truck and that's it, someone who doesn't mind rebuilding an engine or changing a headgasket every 30,000 miles...

 

If you want to drive it to NJ I'll fix it up for you for $3000. That's rebuilt heads, new coils, lifters, crank sensor, plugs, plug wires, gaskets, bolts, inline thermo. o2 sensors. Everything. I highly doubt it needs a new block. I have worked on gatrillions of discos and have only had to replace motors a few times. So figure 1000 in tolls and fuel and a week to get it here and back and for 4k you will have a reliable truck.

 

And you can check out all the tail in bikinis on the Jersey shore. win/win

 

I disagree with Dane,

Buy any premium $40k + vehicle 10 to 15 years old with 100k miles or greater for 15 to 20% of original cost and you WILL HAVE maintenance issues to deal with if the vehicle is still intact at all.

If you are changing a head gasket every 30k you are doing something wrong.

Subaru have more head gasket issues than Rover V8s!

As mentioned in another thread make sure to buy the one with the most documented service history, not the cheapest one you find.

Edit: I also agree with RoverMasterTech... I've been told more than once that I needed a new engine for $10k plus and it was not true.
