Heater Core replacement procedure help

I have a new heater core and want to do the job myself if possible. I have searched vigorously via the forums and google for specific information on the procedure but the only thing I find is unverified claims either that the entire dashboard needs to be removed, or that the dashboard does not need to be removed. No further information on the matter. No pictures, no videos and no diagrams with step by step instructions on accessing and swapping out the core. I looked it up in the rave and found a section on page 1186 to describes the process and found no mention of a dashboard removal. From rave:
Remove
1. Remove heater assembly.
+ HEATING AND VENTILATION,
REPAIRS, Heater assembly - models with
air conditioning.
2. Remove 2 screws securing coolant pipe
saddles and remove saddles.
3. Loosen screws securing coolant pipes to
matrix, release clamps and remove coolant
pipes.
4. Remove and discard 'O' rings.
5. Remove heater matrix.
Refit
1. Position heater matrix, using new 'O' rings fit
coolant pipes and align clamps.
2. Fit saddle clamps and secure with screws
3. Tighten coolant pipe clamp screws.
4. Fit heater assembly.
+ HEATING AND VENTILATION,
REPAIRS, Heater assembly - models with
air conditioning.
The heater blower motor assembly is easy to remove and Ive done it before. I also know how to remove the glove box. But in doing so will these really give me full access to the heater core and thus allow me to swap it out? Also what is the best way to drain the coolant out of the core to prevent a mess in the cabin? Really dont feel like draining the entire cooling system just to replace the heater core either... thoughts would be appreciated.
