Help! Haven't a clue.
For the last couple of weeks every 4 or 5 times i start up my 2000 Discovery 2, there's a steady "hiss" coming from the engine. I'd say it sounds like a tire leaking air but magnified. It stops immediately however as soon as I shift out of park. Also, and only when I get the hissing starts, the dash indicator and gear shifter indicators don't realize the transmission is no longer in park. They still illuminate P although the vehicle functions as it should. And oddly enough another peculiarity only with these hissing starts is the radio does not come on automatically as if it was off when vehicle was shut off before. Any thoughts as to what might be going on would be greatly appreciated.

SuperSport, think you're on the right track. New symptom today. As I was pulling into the driveway I tried to power up the windows but nothing. Oddly after I removed the key from the ignition switch and hit the buttons they went right up. Restarted the vehicle and all was normal. Is there an electrical system I might focus my attention on that would have in common trans, stereo, windows? Could something be awry in the ignition switch? No hissing sound at all today though.

Sometimes my ignition switch will not return to run from the start position. It hangs in the middle. It causes electrical issues, dash indicator says P no matter what gear am in and the windows and sunroofs will not work. As soon as I rotate the key back into the run position, everything is OK.
