Default Help lots of white smoke from exhaust

Hi - I am a new member to this forum and was hoping for some advise from those in the know. I have an M reg Disco TDi which when you start up smokes very heavily from the exhaust, and disappaites reasonably soon after. The engine temperature guage goes to H in 10-15 mins of driving and the oil light flickers. I do not know much about cars hence my post on here and would appreciate some assistance as I do not want to be overcharged by a garage due to my lack of knowledge. Many thanks in advance.

BS

White smoke is coolant, I would say you have a head gasket failing. Next time you start it up, run back and smell the white smoke, if it has a sweet smell it is coolant.
How long has this been happening and are you having to add coolant?

i'd say roughly a week or so. I haven't added anything to the engine since this issue has started. I got the car a few months ago, it has done 180k+ miles and is not worth much but I do like it. I will check tonight but can't say I have noticed it having a sweet smell? If it is the head gasket failing is this a big job?? Thanks for the rapid response.

Check your coolant level when the engine is full and top it off if needed.
If it were the head gasket, yes, it is a bit of a job.

I am a super moderator too you know. I also wear a leather jacket, jeans and loafers and I have a beady necklace. You need to scrap your Landrover and buy a mid-life crisis Audi from Swiss Toni.

We dont have any TDI Disco's here in the US but like Mike said it is most likely a blown head gasket, add water to the radiator before you blow up the engine completly.
The truck may not have much cash value but its priceless to you isint it?
Not sure how much it will cost to fix but definitly less than a new truck.

You can do the head gaskets. I had never worked on engine before in my life. So I asked some questions, downloaded the Rave CD and just did it. With tools and parts it cost me $500 and about a week of work.
