Default Help the new guy with overheating

Well I just got this Disco 2 maybe a month ago but I barely drive it. It's my wifes. The truck drives fine and great but when at a complete stop for too long it'll over heat, but once I start moving again it cools down and the light turns off. It even did this in the snow. I can also say the heat in the truck doesn't work... Any ideas?

check fan, fan clutch and belt

btw, if you keep driving it over heating the first hot day outside you'll be buying a new engine. Which pretty much means your rover will be junk because the engine will cost more than the rover is worth.

The symptoms say there's enough air passing through the radiator when moving to keep it cool, so yeah, likely the fan clutch.
It could be the radiator is clogged, but I'd check the clutch.
Get the car to operating temp. Shut it down and immediately try to turn the fan by hand. If it turns easily you need a new fan clutch.

Make sure your cooling system is bled properly. You probably have a leak. Check the throttle body heater plate first. Common place to leak.

Thanks a lot fellas I'll be checking for all of this once my wife gets home in about an hour. I also haven't noticed it leaking from anywhere either.

the fan turns when its on and when I turn it off by hand i can move it but I can just spin it freely... theres no leaks and I just loosened up the coolant cap (it looked empty) and sure enough the coolant is full. No leaks...

If the engine fan spins freely when the engine is hot then the fan clutch is bad.

Running the engine while the temp light is on means you may be the proud owner of a boat anchor.
NEVER let the temp needle go above the top line on the gauge let alone get into the red.
These trucks have a all aluminum engine and they do not like being overheated.

FYI-A new engine is $7000. A used one is $3-4k. Over heat the engine enough for it to destroy itself and you will be buying a engine, no fix for yours.

Having no heat means you have air in the system. Try the procedure for bleeding the coolant.

The fan should be pretty tough to turn when the engine is hot. Almost locked.
