Red face help please! brake change + 3 amigos

Hi there,

First thanks to everyone who roams these threads looking to help out people like me who probably never should have bought a Land Rover because of their embarrassing lack of car knowledge/expendable income

I have a 2003 Discovery - under 70,000 miles - which I hardly ever drive (Brooklyn dweller). I was told about 2 years ago by the dealer that I needed new brakes ... of course I ignored this because it was a couple grand, I had no funds, and I assumed that since I hardly ever drove it I had time. About a year and 1/2 ago I needed an inspection renewal and the mechanic (private, not dealer) told me I needed new pads or he couldn't certify me so I sprung for new pads, but only for the rear tires.

My brakes have been squeaking bad for the last few months and last week the dreaded "three amigos" came on. I did the test where I slammed on the brakes to judge the reaction and it felt wobbly.

Like most people at the moment I'm still too short on cash to bring it to the dealer, but my cousin has generously offered to change my pads and rotors. Understanding that you probably can't garner too much from my description ... does this usually put a Discovery into a drivable condition or am I still in a safety hazard? Are there any other suggestions for "do-it-yourself" fixes that my cuz could try?

Also where is the best place to buy the pads and rotors? I found these puppies on ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Land-...item563575d75b) but really am clueless here.

Again, thank you so much for any info/suggestions!

- Ashley

Do yourself a favor and call will tillery at roverguy.com. He will hook you up with OEM type rotors and pads for $275 shipped. He knows rovers and they work and will keep the 3 amigos away. Note when you do the rotors you may have to drill out the rotor locator screw. Don't worrying about replacing that little bolt or worry if you drill out the threads even. Also be sure to put sound deadening goop on the back of the pads.
