Default HELP with powersteering

I need some help PLEASE with power streering....

I have a 2003 Discovery. My girlfriends exhusband parked it in the woods and left it sitting there for a year because the powersteering went on it. He determined it was the PS since it was leaking and they had been driving and using it with NO fluid. He told her the pump was bad and since now something else since it was used dry. I asked the dealer and they said the gear box doesnt go bad if it's used dry. I replaced the pump and it's still NOT working. Is there something I'm missing or somewhere else I should be looking?

I DID bleed it, fluid does come out when I turn the wheel to the right with the screw open (I closed it when I turned it to the left). IF the vehicle is running and the bleeder is open, should fluid SQUIRT out or just "come out gently". Did I see somewhere that there is a filter in the system?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve

When you turn the wheel if the valve is open and I mean not just cracked open. It will shoot up like a geyser! If the hood wasn't there to stop mine I'm not sure how high it would have gone.......needless to say I do not try to do that by myself anymore..LOL.

There is a steering box and a power steering pump.
If the pump is ran dry it will be toast in no time flat.
The steering box you cant hurt, it is just gears, the pump does all the work the box turns the wheels.

Sounds like the pump is toast.
Buy a used one, the rebuilt ones tend not to last.

I do have a used one in there now. I'm wondering if I have a clog somewhere in the line as it was sitting for so long in the woods. The fly wheel on the starter was also rusted and caused me to have to replaced that.

Is there some where I can easily open the steering box up with out screwing anything up OR a good place I can try and blow through it?

ALso, how do I tighen up the belt?

If your belt is loose that can cause the power steering not to work.
If it is loose you need to replace the belt and the belt tensioner.

Then you have it routed wrong.
go to www.atlanticbritish.com and scroll to the bottom of the page and find the "tech tips".
Then find the "belt routing" diagram for your truck.
When routed correctly it will be tight.

Once you make sure the belt is routed correctly, start the engine and see if you have p/s fluid swirling in the bottle, if not, either you have a bad pump or it needs to be bled properly.

HAHA, i'm a dope....so I plugged the PS res. and forgot to remove the plug I put in.

Anyhow, I'm geting more of a bubbling in the res now and not a swirling. not like little bubbles, but like HOT TUB style bubble. I have the bleeder open and turning the wheels but not too much. If I turn the wheel the the right, I can get fluid moving out of the bleeder (I have a hose going from the bleeder screw to the PS res. ) If I turn the wheel to the left, it seems to suck back in. I'm guessing that I need to close the screw when turning the wheel left?

Thanks again for all of your help!
