Default Help removing fan

Does anyone have any tricks to getting their radiator fan off. I have removed ones on my runnning Discoverys but I purchased a new parts car and can not for the life of me get the fan to break loose. I have tried everything I can think of (except getting the LR tools of course) to get this sucker off. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Are you using a rental tool set from an auto parts store? If so, measure the 36mm wrench to make sure it actually is 36mm. My experience has been that those tool set are ofter so worn that the 36mm is more like 38-40mm and thus pretty useless.

Once I got a 36mm that wasn't worn out, I was able to remove my fan clutch in under 5 minutes...

I used a chain vise grips on the pulley and a 36mm and it worked well for a stubborn fan
Once you lock the vise grips over the pulley , it will rest against another part of the engine and you can take a deadblow mallet to the end of the 36mm and it will pop off.

You can also get a pipe wrench on the pulley and wedge it against another pulley before whacking the fan nut. Do a search on here for 'getting your nut off' and you'll find photos someone posted.

Here is how I did it:

Went to Northern Tool and got a huge 36mm open end box wrench. Put the wrench on the nut and use a rubber mallet to hit it. When I say hit it, I mean HIT IT...like you are playing baseball. Don't hold back. It will knock the nut loose every time. And you should be hitting it to the left, like a right handed batter.

One more thing, the serpentine belt needs to on as well.

Get the 36mm fan clutch tool at Advanced
http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web..._T|GRP2083____

Put your 1/2" breaker bar on the smaller part with the wide mouth, hook that over the pulley shaft and catch one of the bolt heads. That gives you something to hold the pulley still, the rest is easy.

This way works each and every time, except I dont use a rubber mallet, I use a hammer.

Thanks for all the help. Got the right tools and came right off. I was being cheap and using a large channel lock and just couldn't keep it tight enough. Went a bought a 36mm wrench and used a chain binder on the pulley and 10 seconds later I was done. I guess having the right tools helps!. Thanks again!
