Help with shifter?
Hello all,
I am newbie looking into purchasing a D1 on the cheap (looking forward to some quality wrenching). I have found a high mileage 96 that fits that bill. The owner says that he has to start it in Neutral. He also says that when he puts it in Park, he still has to set the handbrake to keep it from rolling?
Could this be as simple as tightening the shifter cable? If it is not, how bad could it be?
There are other issues, so if I buy it, you will probably be hearing alot from me.
Thanks for any help.

Parking pin inside of transmission was broken or the nut under the shifter cover is loose.
When parking on incline you must put the parking brake on then take your foot off the brake and let the parking hold the truck then put it in park this will insure that the parking pin inside of the tranny is not broke.

it is very important that everyone parks like that on the slightest incline to ensure longer life of transmission/shift related parts.
Religiously i press the brakes, put my rig in neutral, bring up the parking brake, release my foot off the brakes, let the rig rest on it's own, then engage into park.
The reverse is: press brakes, engage N, release parking brakes, engage r, release brakes. i think ( i 4 get what i do...i'll update this again tonight when I go home) lol
the rule of thumb i use in determining if i need to do this is:
If i let off the brakes, can the rover roll forward or backward on it's own. If yes, then i do the above sequence, if not then do the traditional method.

Thanks LANDZUII,
That makes alot of sense. What I was thinking was the fact that it would not start in Park suggested that it might be the nut under the shifter.
Now I know nothing of the particular inner workings of a Disco, but here was my theory:
The shifter nut/cable is loose, keeping the truck from going into Park and also keeping the Neutral safety switch from activating.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,

If the shifter cable is loose then not only will not go into park all the way you can also be in 3rd when you think that you are in 4th.
Start by tightening the nut inside the shifter handle, if thats not it then it must be the parking prawl.
EDIT:some movement after you park and let off the brake is normal, a inch or 2 at most as there is slack in the driveline gears.

I mean, when I do my incline park sequence i still get that two inch movement but it is held on by the parking brake. I never let the tranny hold the weight of the rover.
You are correct, you dont want 5000lbs resting on the trans.
A out of adjustment shifter cable will cause a no start because you are not all the way in park so the neutral safety switch will not let you start the engine because you are not in park.
Now I realize that does not mean that the Prawl is not broken, but can we say that because of the concurrent symptoms that it is likely the cable/nut?
Thanks and thanks again,
