High mileage Disco without changing head gaskets
I was just wondering if anyone has gone more than 150,000 miles WITHOUT having their head gaskets fail. If so, how do you make them last that long.
You're dreaming...like most of us in there first years of denial... Any car or truck where not designed to last that long.. If they where they would have to cost twice to three times that amount as dealers only make their money in service... Without service they would go belly up....
If you search the forums you should be able to get your question answered on the many technical explanations. Basically a bad formula of materials and a big dumb F$ck who signed off on it. You don't think land rover dealers makes money selling cars do you?

My Caravan has over 170,000 and it's on the original head gasket. Take care of the engine and it will last, abuse the engine and things fall apart a lot faster. The LR is a higher compression engine than the Dodge, so there is more pressure on it, but cars can make it more than 150,000 without changing the head gasket.
My Volvo has over 165,000 miles with the original head gaskets. My dads Ford truck has over 200,000 miles and an old car that he owned had over 185,000 miles with the original head gaskets as well. I think the LR head gaskets or engine are just poorly designed.
Over 130,000 on my 2003 SE7. Still original head gaskets. Sold my '87 Audi 5000CSTQ 5 speed 2 years ago with just under 300,000 on it and no engine gasket work was ever done to it. In fact, it never had/needed any major work. All original engine and drivetrain when I sold it. My daily driver '95 Mitsu Montero has 190,000 on it - no engine gasket work has ever been needed.(does need new valve seals though)

Cars used to be pretty much junk after 100k miles, but now a days, many cars don't even need their first tune-up until 100k miles. Car engines are not what they used to be. It was very uncommon for a car to have over 200k, now it's pretty common.
