certainly an additional $3/ tank is worth the head ache. A bottle of boost cost more than that!
Also the majority of Rovers in "undeveloped" parts of the world are diesel engins that will run on darn-near anything.

RE: Is High Octane fuel really necessary???
Interesting discussion. I think the next vehicle I get will either be a Range Rover or a Land Cruiser. I wonder if the newer Rover engines that (I think) were BMW designed are better running and more reliable? I'm slightly disappointed in the Discovery's power train design the more I hear about it, but what the heck nothing is ever perfect. It's still a great looking vehicle and has nearly all the features I like having in an SUV. Spending $3 or $4 extra per tank is no big deal to me to keep a vehicle running smoothly and reliably. But I'd be interested in seeing a comparison between Rover's new 4.4L V8 vs the old Buick 4.6L vs Toyota's new 5.7L V8 in the new Land Cruiser.

It's a real shame we can't get the diesels here. I got to spend a lot of time in a pre-production07 Defender with the turbo diesel, and it was fanastic. It was a little pokey on the highway, but around town it was great, and the fuel mileage wasso much better.

Roger that on the Diesel thing....Blame it on California emissions laws and America's in-ability to get the diesel smoke belchers of the 70's out of our minds.
Jeep almost had it but they had to stuff the diesel motor into the P.O.S Liberty. I shake my head in shame....

That's not directly comparable since they only measure Motor Octane Number. Our octane rating is an AKI which is MON+RON/2. Their 94 MON compares closely to our 87 AKI.
