have a 04 disco with roughly 31,400 miles. just got the 30k maintenance service at the dealer. when i got the car back, have noticed a fainthigh pitch noise coming from the engine when i hit 70 mph and up. the noise only occurs when i hit the gas and is audilbe again only when i hit70 mph. anything below 70mph, no noise. any ideas?

Could be a bad bearing, bad serpentine belt, Tensioner or pulley.
I would suggest you contact your dealer and get it back in at your convience, also take a mechanic out and duplicate the noise so they know exactly what your are hearing.

thanks mike for your insight. yeah, at the 30k maintenance, the dealer said that the serpentine belt needed to be replaced. i'm getting it replaced next week along with my brakes. would a bad belt be causing this high pitch noise i'm hearing at 70 mph? i sure hope so.

I would hold off on replacing the serpentine belt assuming it is OK and not causing the noise, because Rover will replace it as part of the 45K service your truck igoing to get.

This doesn't have to necessarily be coming from the engine. It might only be happening when you give it gas because this is when the entire drivetrain is under higherload. Might be gear whine from the transfer case, or a bearing that is starting to go out somewhere. Did the dealer change the transfer case oil? I have a whine that I sometimes hear, but only when I remove my foot off the gas above 60 - 65 mph.

thanks for all the insight. yeah, at the 30k maintenace, all the fluids were changed on the disco. i don't know if the dealer did a crap job and didn't fully tighten a seal or bearing or what not. replacing the serpentine belt and brakes today. the independent mechanic who i bring my disco to says that the belt is cracking and needs to be replaced. i'm waiting to see if this clears the problem, if not, thank god for warranty.
