Currently have two 2000's over 200k, one at 230k, one at 218k. Both have original bottom ends and oil pumps, good oil pressure. Spoke to a Disco owner one day who had 300ish on his. Both of mine seem to be running strong and smooth. Have another 03 with 160k on it which runs very well also.

From an engineering perspective I see know reason these should not last in the 300k range on the original engine with a headgasket change. Land Rover specified synthetic engine oil from the factory, so I believe some it depends on how long it remained being serviced at the dealer. The dealers knew they had to remove and replace the oil baffle at every oil change, but independent shops did not know this. Axles and transfer case were also filled with synthetics so should have no bearing or gear failures in the first half million miles. Finally, I had a friend who was the powertrain engineer at BMW for the SUV's, asked him about the transmission. He asked the ZF engineer (used in multiple BMW's), his opinion was they were good for 400k.

I'm planning to take the 230k mile to the end, we will see how far it gets.

214k original engine, solid rust free frame and interior in good shape save for sagging headliner and missing radio.

I have to chime in on this one...

Couple months ago a transmission intercooler line "popped" off at the intercooler. Not broken, it just popped off. Unfortunately I was doing 70+mph on the highway. Started smoking, rpms skyrocketed and loud revving. Took awhile for me to reach the nearest exit but by the time I pulled over most all the fluid was gone. What a crazy ordeal that was! Ended up replacing the filter and gasket and did 2 manual flushes; many weeks later all appears well (mostly). Still have a hard time hitting 55+mph on hills so Im gonna do afew more manual flushes until the fluid flows red.

I expect imminent failure but I gotta say Im impressed it got this far and still going strong. Im keeping the transmission from my parts truck just in case but Ill do what I can to keep this one running as a testament to ZF.

Yeah I’ll have to say out of other vehicles I’ve driven or owned the ZF’s in the D1/D2 have been extremely robust. The 4spd auto I had in two of my Jeep’s was like an egg carton strength wise. I’ve never been afraid to hammer a well kept LR’s transmission.

Everyone with a early year d2 ought to be watching their cooler lines. Ours did the same thing, my wife put it in neutral, shut it off and pulled over. I grabbed some hydraulic line and clamped it in place of the original lines. Works like a charm.
The other cooler line has worn as well but I pulled that one off my hand so I fixed it before it blew.

There is a verified report in the LRO where a guy in Australia has just turned 1,000,000 kms, yep 1,000,000 kilometres (62137 miles) on his 04 D2A with manual 380 box and the original TD5 engine. Not many can claim those miles.
