Default Highway driving in the Snow diff lock on or off???

This is my first winter with my 95 disco. So I'm not sure about the following.
It was recomended to me with my previous 4x4, with locking hubs, not to run with them locked in on a highway when there was compacted snow or ice. When cornering one front wheel will loose traction, since it must turn at a different speed it will slip, causing you to loose control.

Does this also apply to my 95 Disco?? I know with the diff lock unlocked there is no problem as the differentials take care of the different wheel speeds. But with the diff lock on both axles turn at the same speed, so is there a chance one wheel will loose traction around a corner?

Thanks

Joe

If the surface is hard packed and you are in fact at highway speed, don't lock up. Around town in deep soft non packed snow you can, just be careful.
Better deal is to run with good snow tires.

Brad,
You could get kciked out of the Rover forum for refering to your Disco as an SUV and even more so comparing it to a FooF Exploder, never ever mention these two words when talking about you Rover.
As for your question, Disco's are great in the snow, with the right tires of course.

Thanks, that's what I figured. I sure see a lot of 4x4's in the ditch in snowy weather, I wonder if that's part of the reason.

Don't run with the diff lock engaged on tarmac, unless it is very slippery. Tyre choice has a lot to do with traction in snow & ice. It does'nt matter if you've got 8 wheel drive, if the tyres are sliding you're still going off the road.
I drove one of those Ford Expedition things in Canada in the snow, What a heap of junk, how can Ford sell such a bad car?

Just because it will 'go' in the snow, doesn't mean it will 'slow'... traction is much better thanks to permanent 4x4 - but it's still only got 1 brake in each corner.

Tread carefully and it will never let you down.

Cheers,

I agree on having good tires in the snow. I've got these toyo Open Country A/T's and am very happy so far.
