Hitches n' Motos
Hey-O,
I am in the process of updating my suspension (OME HD's 762 & 779, Bil HD's) in order to better handle the addition of one of the cooler accessories i could imagine on the back of a Disco II... A BMW R1150GSA!! Well this introduces a new problem. The bike weighs 535lbs dressed and the carrier would be an additional 100lbs pushing the max tongue weight (550lbs?) by 85lbs... So what is the verdict... To much? If so, what Class IV works for us? Has anyone done this yet? Please weigh in if you have had the pleasure/misfortune of trying to get one of these set ups to work. I relocated the spare to the roof rack last night to up the side clearance... I hope this can work.

You are going to be pushing it, maybe reinforcing the receiver, use a solid tongue with a H.D. 2" ball and shank and you could get away with it. I am not worried about if the truck can handle the weight just the hitch specs.
Have you already purchased your lift, if not consider going to OME Sport shocks for more wheel travel and a stronger shock.

Yeah the parts are on there way. I went with the Bils because i heard that they were better for Highway Driving and i don't particularly need the extra inch on travel from the OME's. Is the build qaulity that much better on the OME?? I thought that the Bils would at least be as good as the OME options?? The setup doesn't use a hitch and ball, it would be this (http://www.discountramps.com/hd-motorcycle-carrier.htm). The weight seems like it would be ok (everything tends to be considerably underrated.) Does anyone know of a class 4 option??
I hauled a Rm 250 motorcross bike on a 100 lb. rack on the back of my 2000 Discovery with stock springs. The bike weighs about 250 lbs. There was a lot of saging of the rear of the Discovery. The long overhang over the rearend does not help. The bike also blocks the taillights and licence plate. I ended up adding some lights to the rack so I would not get rearended. I sold the rack and now use a trailer. Your BMW will be to heavy even with the HD springs.

Lemme see if I have this straight. You're gonna put an BMW 1100class bike behind your Disco... *not* on a trailer?
Hanging crosswise, like a bicycle?
Perhaps it's me, but my snap answer is "are you nuts"? :-)

It's a motocross bike? An 1150? When did they do *that*?

Yeah, I have Triumph Sprint Sport touring bike and thought about this idea for about 1 day. If it does fail, then what? I figure that you are out about $17,000. The trailer cost, you can find an adequate trailer for way less.
My question, if it is a BMW you need to be riding that to where ever you are going. COME ON!
Also, that is a totally awesome bike. The Disco of the two wheel world!

I know it is over kill but My fiance and i are looking for a recovery vehicle for when we do river runs on our canoe (~50-100 miles) and need a way to get back to the truck after, two up... Disco to the extraction, roll off the bike lock it to a tree, disco to the drop in, canoe, bike to the disco roll on and then back down to recover the canoe. Also it is my DREAM bike and has been for quite a good while now. I am kinda pissed that i can get this to work without a trailer... I just dont like them

It can be done. I also canoe and I love the plan.
Here,

Notice they reccomend the suspension be modified--which are thinking. Also the hitch rating is 500 for most class III so you would need to butch it up a bit. The carrier recommends that you go to a class V or at least IV.
Where there is a will, there is a way!
Make sure to attach photos of the rig with the bike and canoe. I want a picture for my room!
