There is a hole on top that the coolant sensor goes into. Where is the opening you speak of?

I think I read somewhere that it's a water drain for that valley.

if you wouldn't keep that thing so sparkling clean, you wouldn't notice that little stuff.

I wondered that last time I was laying in the engine (messing with coils). Is it really a drain hole?

that's funny about the engine being clean. i haven't cleaned it and I live in the ozark and drive down dirt road. up rock hills, through mud and just about anywhere else I can test it. But mud I hate because it gets stuck to everything so i'm going to try not to go through deep mud anymore. last week my carpet was wet from doing that and washing mud off my Disco is a pain!!!! but the engine itself iv'e never cleaned. maybe it cleans itself lol. If I new how to take a picture from my computer and put it on this forum I wouldn't use pinterest. Its weird other have the hole on the intake manifold but no-one's sure what the hole is for.

this is from another post I just read- that hole is where a "dowel pin" sets between the upper and lower intake. the "dowel" should be pressed into the lower I/T. and the top lines up on it. there are 2 of these dowel pins, 1 being the hole, and the other that you cannot see. Whatever that means i'm not sure.

That makes total sense. It is hard to line up the intake without boogering the intake gasket. But I have two disco ii engines (one on a stand) and neither one has that dowel.
