holy s#$%, the Discos engine just blew up
You know, with all due respect to the people who recommend the Seafoam treatment, I can't say that it did a whole lot for my engine.
I misread the "How to" and even ran *two* cans through my engine.
One month later I replaced the head gaskets. True, it was leaking before but the leak rate increased exponentially over the course of that month.
After the engine was disassembled, I found the intake was nasty and the pistons still had copious amounts of carbon buildup. I would have expected it to be cleaner with only a few hundred miles on the clock since I'd sucked two cans worth through the intake.

I have owned so many DIs and DIIs and Series XX and never done these crazy treatments.
It is a shame that you created a HYDRO LOCK in cylinder 7, cracking your piston crown and causing the wrist pin to fracture its journals letting the connecting rod punch a hole through the block.
What a trajedy to see a nice 4.0 L go to waste.
If you want to clean your throttle body, get some carb cleaner, spray it on a shop rag, hold the throttle open and rub the black deposits off by hand.
If you want to clean the back of your intake valves, use TECHRON, which is OEM approved as a fuel additive that goes in the gas tank. I use it on my V8 5 liter BMW M5 with 400 HP and it runs as good as new.
Never let the engine ingest any liquid or foam or whatever while running, because no one can meter the amount of liquid entering the combustion chambers.
To fix this tragedy, get a 4.0 L and drop it in. It will take a Saturday with the proper tools and you will be back on the road.
Make sure the engine you get does not have sludge.

Can anyone tell me what this means?
4.6L, VIN 9, 7th digit), (Discovery), w/sec air inj 46K OEM T166-D
I know there were some bad 03 engines, were there bad 04s as well? Is this anywhere near that bad lot? My disco doesn't have secondary air inj, is this removable for a swap? What is T166-D?

The SAI ports can either be plugged, or you can use the heads from your 4.0.
Bummer, I have always cleaned the throttle body with the engine running on all of the injected vehicles I nave owned, ( a line mech showed me how by revving the engine and spraying.) I guess anything is possible. I have never been a big fan of magic fixes like sea foam ect, ect,. You still have a hole in your engine and my input dose not help. I am currently repairing my 01 D2 engine after coolant spoiled the oil. I replaced bearings and rings after previously doing the heads and gaskets( did not fix it). Turned out to be the gasket between the cam cover and block. Good luck! Jneil
Doing an induction cleaning had nothing to do with the engine failing. As for the misfire, maybe cause it could have really cleaned out that cylinder and there may have been a head gasket issue already going on. I bet if that engine were opened up you'll find the cylinder wall washed clean by a long term coolant leak.
And yes, find a 4.6 for the added performance.

I assume that at least one of the heads will be damaged due to the rod letting go, but it's good to know I can just plug the SAI ports. Does the SAI do anything beneficial that I should want to have it?
