Homebuilt D2 Bumpers
I took some pictures throughout the process, so figured I post them to help other who may be interested.
It's an extremely technical process, requiring mad geometry skills and at least one PHD in Engineering. Job will be made easier if there is a rocket scientist that lives down the street.
Step by step breakdown (try and keep up, please...)
- Look at pics on the google
- Drink case of beer
- Use cardboard from beer case to make some templates
- Plasma out the frame brackets
- Mount frame brackets to frame
- Plate in the area
- Make holes for winch
- Mount winch
- Butcher the grille
- Drink more beer
- Eyeball some marks onto some tubing and bend it up
- Have guy who's drank the LEAST amount of beer stand back and tell you when it looks good
- Weld up tubing
- Done. Celebrate with a beer
All joking aside, this was a quick easy bumper for my D2 winter rig that I picked up for CHEAP a few weeks ago. I wanted something simple, lightweight, and high clearance.
I think we only picked up the tape measure 2 or 3 times... Just went with the "looks good" technique.
Plan to do a rear bumper to match next week, so stay tuned...
