I have a functional temporary system, that seems to work well. It does require that the plastic "security cover" is left off, which is fine by me for now.
A very long allen key - not sure what it was for any more
The light piece just to the left of the bolt for the A/C fan is the release (painted it white for visibility)
The Allen key in position to pop the hood, just a firm push on the catch gets it open.

I ended up doing similar to others but maybe a step further. Using a bike derailleur cable I made swedged a loop and hooked it on the latch pull behind the factory cable eye. Then ran it down to exit below the front. I added two cable guides (not in pictures) behind existing screws to hold the housing. Quick pull and its open. Does not interfere with the stock pull or the plastic cover. I can tuck the lower cable up behind the frame.
