Hopeing for some insight into LRs
Hi,
I have a 1994 jeep wrangler and have been really interested in selling it and getting a 2004 discovery. I would just like for someone to give me the pros and cons of land rovers. I would also ask that you guys address the general stereotype that land rovers are very unreliable and expensive to fix. I dont mind working on a vehicle myself, do all the work on my jeep, and just want to know if they are real hard to work on. Also id like to put 35s or 33s on any LR i get. The ratings on the websites for rovers are terrible they are even worse for wranglers and i love mine. Any insight and info would be appreciated.

Read that thread.
They are only unreliable if you dont take care of them, you MUST use premium gas, if you are not going to use it then dont buy one.
Why would you want to put huge tires on it?
If you get one take it off road first, then decide what you think you need.

Agreed with Spike on the tires. Take it off road stock before anythign just to get used to it, then if you feel you need more you may want a 2" lift and maybe 32" tires. This is what most of us go with since any more than that and you start talking about some very expensive modifications, not to mention these things are beastly even stock. I'm constantly pulling my buddy's XJ out of the mud. He's on 33" tires with a 6" lift, I'm stock with bald street tires.

Keep in mind that the Camel Trophy trucks are 100% bone stock.
The only things added to them is a roll cage and the brush guard, winch, roof rack, stock suspension, stock sized tires and a snorkel.

I owned Jeeps for some 20 years, and all but my first YJ were modified. My second YJ had a 2 inch susp.lift, 1 inch body lift and 32 inch tires. my XJ had 5 inches of susp.lift and 32 inch tires and my TJ had a Teraflex 3 inch lift with 33 inch MTRs tires. In fact, I owned both the TJ and Discovery for about a year. I ended up selling the TJ cause I just wasn't being used anymore. Rode too rough ( and it was a Cadillac compared to a YJ), I suddenly fealt cramped up in the Jeep since to Disco had much,much more room, The wind noise with the soft top on started driving me nuts and to be honest, I kinda enjoyed to way people looked at the Disco with a wow! in their eyes.
If you get a Discovery, you will have to address some issues that the previous owner didn't want to address, In fact, most Disco owners get rid of them when the ''to do'' list gets too long and costly. Sooner or later, you'll have to fix oil leaks ( unless you don't mind them), door lock actuators, Self leveling suspension leaks if you have SLS and a few other things. So having a few grands set aside for the unevitable is very wise. When new, they were big expensive vehicles, and once used they are big expensive vehicles to fix. But if you are somewhat comfortable working on your own truck, you'll at least save on labor.
