Default Horn fuse blown

I had a blown horn fuse and, today, in order to pass inspection, i replaced the fuse (#16 - 10A I believe.) Anyway, I know they only honk once and so that's all I needed. Passed.

However, fuse is blown again and, of course, I don't like fires so i won't be replacing it until I figure out what's causing it. Obviously the horns work, but the switches/horn buttons do feel as if they want to pop out of the steering wheel at any moment.

In any case, could the horns be working and still cause a short?
Can I remove and test the horn buttons without fear of deploying the SRS?

Where would you start to look for the cause of a blown horn fuse?

The dash buttons are not making the fuse blow, they simply operate the low current coil of the horn relay. But the relay contact connects both horns in parallel to the fuse, and perhaps one horn coil is shorted. Unplug both horns, replace fuse, try (should make horn relay click, but no noise and fuse OK). The re-attach horns one at a time and test.

And your horns could be work, but failing, drawing too many amps hence blowing the fuse.

That's a good point, as well, Mike!
  1. I disconnected both horns and I can hear the relay when I depress the horn button(s.) No blown fuse.
  2. I reconnected the low tone and I depressed the button in short and long bursts. Low tone works. No blown fuse.
  3. I disconnected the low tone and reconnected the high tone. Depressed the button and no sound at all. I could hear the relay at first, then nothing. Blown fuse.
  4. Will replace the low tone horn and that should do it.

I went to Autozone to purchase a generic one, but would have to splice the connector and I'd rather keep it factory. So, will be looking to order an original that can match up to that plug.

Thanks, Savannah, for the simple testing procedure.

Update: Got the high tone OEM horn from AB today. Bolted on, connected, tested... long and short horn button presses and all is good. No blown fuses.

It sounds great - I love the harmonics. I realized that I've had this vehicle now for two years only using the low tone.

Yet again, the forums saved me money and time.

2001 D2. My horn keeps blowing the fuse. What is the likelihood that it is the horn(s)? If I’m going to take off the front grill to check the horns, I figure I might as well replace both. But if there is another way to check, I want to try that first. Thanks

Are both horns working? If one is on it's way out = it'll pop the fuse.

Neither work. No sound. They worked and now they don’t. Fuse keeps blowing. Even blew a 15 amp fuse.

Check wiring, and use a 12v battery with a little set of leads to test each horn individually.
