Default How to check suspension..

My wifes 02 disco is a bit bumpy. I think it might be time to update the suspension. 117,000 miles on it now..
What do I have to purchase to make it a smoother ride for her and what is a reasonable price..?? Thanks for the help..

At that mileage I'm sure the suspension is getting pretty tired. I don't remember if 02 even has them, but if so do you still have the rear air springs or is it coils?

The first step would be to replace your shocks at all 4 corners. Of course if you are thinking about a lift this sound like an opportune time to do it.

Depending on how you drive it, you might get away with a new OME steering stabilizer and HD shock. If you go off road much, you should also replace the springs, they normally collaps around 50,000 miles.
This is a pretty easy job if you are at all mechanical, so don't let a shop do it, they will charge $250 plus in labor alone.

DiscoMike, How do you recommend checking the front springs to see if the are "collapsed"? Do youhave some tells that you use?

Thanks,

Cool.. I am pretty good at doing work myself. No air tools, just good old fashioned man powered. As long as regular sockets and wrenches, etc, are what I need, then I should be ok.
I would like to do the shocks and coils at the same time.. Just sounds like a good time while Im in there..Anyone have some ballpark figures to do it myself? I

Measure and compare to the factory specs in your owners manual.
It isn't worth the time though, cause all Rover factory coils drop like a rock over the first 50,000 miles or so depending on how hard you play with it.

As far as price it depends on how far you want to reach down your pocket. An OME shock is about 90 bucks a piece,Bilstein 115. A set of OME shocks and coils almost 700................to infinity and beyond.......... but its all better if you DIY

Sounds like I should think about replacing them.... I just went through 62K....

I was reading the Rave CD on the coils last night, and there was mention the coils for the Diesel were a little different. I would presume that they are stiffer since they have to support the weight of the heavier engine? Has anyone ever used the diesel springs in a gasser to get a stiffer ride?

Or are there other springs out there that keep the stock ride height but are stiffer? All the aftermarket I have seen lift the car a bit.... I am looking to keep it the same height.

I did replace the stock shocks with Bilsteins. Good stuff.

can I replace just the shocks first then get to the coils when I have some extra $ ???? will it damage the shocks or prematurely wear them out?
