100% stock '97. Water is up to the hood. I do it evey spring to wash the road salt off the undercarriage, and because it is fun.

If you want to go any deeper than disco mike said, you should look into a snorkel, dielectric grease for all the electrical connections, and learn as much about wading as possible. One mistake and you could ruin your truck forever. Without a snorkel (or something similar) I would not even go to the top of the tires, but sometimes Im too careful! Just my $.02

Unless you have a TDI, I'm not sure how effective snorkels would be save reducing the amount of dust you suck in.
That being said, is there any reduction in airflow to the intake through a snorkel? Given that there's a smallish neck near the top, would that affect the fuel/air mixture?

My snorkel has made my air filter last much longer.
I have not seen any change in mileage or get up and go.
Mine is for deep desert.

Water deeper than your tyres is definately possible, its just you must get a good bow wave going once your in the wet stuff.
V8's will always be more "risky" as the amount of electrics under the hood that need to be water tight, and a well fitted / sealed snorkel WILL improve your wading depth as the intake is far to low for deep water and a snorkel will stop you sucking in water.
Snorkels also help with amount of air going into the engine, in particular when moving as you get a ram effect down the tube, also they reduce the dust a LOT when in dusty conditions.
I would not consider a snorkel a waste of money at all
Your axle / transfer / box breathers are just as important to be moved "higher" up for deep water as well.
