Default How do I drain the cooling system?

99 D2, in the process of resealing the front engine cover. Got the pan off, stumbled on where the drain is for the radiator.

I really, really do not want the just pull a hose and watch the coolant land everywhere in the garage but where I put the catch-pan.

Any advise?

Thanks, David

Im not to sure on that one, maybe its due to me being lazy, but I have never drained a cooling system on any vehicle whatsoever, that I didnt get coolant coming out like a rain storm. Even when I have worked on a car with a proper drain plug, it never fails that some frame part, or hose or something is directly in the flow path of the drain, and the rain storm ensues..... Good luck man, I live in the country, so in my case, i would simply forgoe an EPA violation, maunally push the rover onto some grass, undo the bottom hose, and let her fly.... or flow...lol I dont suggest that you do this, but I have gotten so tired of coolant splashing in my face, and eyes, that I have decided,to hell with it, give me a fine!!!

Accoring to the RAVE C/D, there is no drain except the two plugs on the sides of the block. It actually states "remove the lower radiator hose and drain the cooling system."

Bloody hell. Guess I'll have a rainstorm in my garage. The driveway slopes down to the street and I am not pushing this thing out in the rain to only try to push it back in and fail.

Thanks for the help.

you don't have to push it, you can drive it back in. An engine can run without coolant for a few minutes (depending on outside air temp)

I have stuck a small plastic hose in the radiator and blew compresses air across the end to create a vacuum and the coolant will drain out that way

Put your oil drain pan under the truck to catch the coolant after you remove the lower radiator hose.

lol,how can you tell rovers are english;my 1987 jag xj12 did not have a rad drain until i put one in.they must not want you to change coolant so they can make money off of parts, like head gaskets, dropped valve seats, dropped sleeves.i have never paid attention to a cooling system like i have on an english vehicle.but they are addicting.
