Question for you?
When a light goes on what do you do?
You should find the closest place to park and check it out. Not drive 700 miles... Unless you have a lot of cash.... Then you don't have to worry. But you could of found this out at mile 500 and added fluid, then stopped every 50 miles or so and added more fluid...... Could of saved you $$$$$$$

That's probably tough to do when you are in the middle of moving across country.

Ummm..not really. The first sign of noise/vibration stop and inspect. Remove propshaft, lock CDL, drive to destination or next town with a driveline shop and get the propshaft rebuilt.

But not 700 miles. In his case he will be lucky just to be able to move, my money is on a fried t/case and driving it is not going to get him far. One way or the other he is stranded and better start looking for a replacement t/case and not one out of a D1 but one from a 99, 2000,2001 or 2004.

I did stop when I saw the light... thats when I did the check and found the case almost empty. I parked the disco and took the other rig in our mini caravan and got supplies to band-aid the truck. after the original issue the light only came on toward the end of long uphill jaunts, I was pulling a 18' trailer that was loaded so I honestly believe that was the trans just getting hot... so any one know a median price on a used t-case and what should I be looking for when i examine a second hand unit?

And thanks amccullough for being understanding.. its extreamly difficult being 25 and moving away from all you know with a limited budget and having to fix a new to you rig on the side of the road.

About $250 for a used transfer case.
But be sure to check your transmission too.

I meant stopping when the propshaft started to go. I've never seen one go without at least some warning, audible or vibration.

Yeah, I know it can be difficult to move cross country at that age, with little money and not knowing where you are. I've done it.
