Okay . . .

It's time for a set of new tires for my 2000 Disco II. I'm currently running 245/70/16, which have been pretty good, but they are about done. I went to my local tire shop, aand they recommended going with 245/75/16 in order to get a 6-ply, for better performance and puncture resistance, especially off-road.

My main questions are:

1. How much tire can an unmodified 2000 Disco II handle before we start rubbing on the wheel wells, especially with unimproved and off-road use.

2. Is a 6-ply really that much better than a 4-ply? Should I spend the extra for a 10-ply?

Whether it is worth t he extra money will depend on how much time you spend off-road. Try to stay with the stock size. Reasons. Increasing the size will affect the wheel travel. changing the size will cause your speedometer to be wrong. Increase in brake wear, decrease in torque. If you wish to change things around check in the mods section of the forum, and see what others have done. hope itt helps. gotta love a rover. duboff

 

one thing I forgot to say was check the date of manufacture on the tire, reason. tires can dry roth on the shelf. most should be replace after 4 years. don't let someone sell you an old set of tires. alot of the sells people do not know this. they will say it is crap. It is not. I learned the lesson the hard way. tires in good shape, blow out on the road. reason old tires. hope it helps. duboff

 

The problem here is that with the 245/65/16 stock size, you end up spending a LOT more for your tires than if you go up to a 70 or 75. The 65s just aren't that common, at least not out here. Every time I mention them, I get weird looks from folks.

I was aware of the speedo issue, and the torque problem, but its hard from me to justify spending $100+ more . . .

 

I put 245 75r buckshot maxxis mudders on mine. They do look like an awfully close fit on the front, but I did some moderate offroading and they never rubbed. So I guess as long as you don't stay on the trail these work nicely. As a matter of fact the Gateway where I had 'em put on didn't really like it but I went back a few weeks ago after I installed my OME lift, they were all like DAMN!! But I did run them for several months totally stock. I got all 4 for around $450. I forgot to mention the truck had the same size michellin tires on it when I got her. They were just a lil slicker than I like.

 

I put 265/70/16's on my '01 and have had no problems at all.

 

Has anyone out there had experience with Kelly tires? One of the local places recommended the Kelly Safari Trex, which seems to be a newer tire. I'm not finding any info out there. It's a 6-ply, designed for on or off-road. I've never used Kelly, so I'm not sure of the quality.

 

the kelly tire is a mark from the racer kellly springfield. usually associated with street proformance. check the kelly springfield site. it might have some specs for you. duboff

 

I put 255/70/16 BF Goodwrich All terrain T/A's on my 00 Disco II and they do not rub one bit. I was told by some tire stores that because the BFG tires were not rated for the rover that they would not put them on the vehicle. I then found a Big O tires joint that would put the tires on for me and they got my money.
I chose the BFG over the rest because they are outstanding off road / snow/ ice. I had a set on my old Totyota pickup and they hardly wore at all.
I've had these now for about a year and you can hardly tell that they have any miles on them, just my 2 cents....

 

Yeah, I check the site. I don't know enough about tire specs to make heads or tails of the whole thing. All I know is that they are a 6-ply tire, rated for both on and off-road. Another thing I'm hesitant about is that they don't have the aggressive profile that the BFG All-Terrain A/Ts have.
