I am stuck at the beach, help!
I have a 99 discovery 2. The front drive shaft is toast. I have the rear bolts off but I can't break the front ones loose(at the axle). The question I have is, can I tie the drive shaft off or does it turn with the axle gears? Are the front wheels engaged and is the shaft going to turn and break free of the tie off? I just need to get home and then I can put a air wrench on it.
That sucks,
I thnk the only way you can do this is if you have cdl like on a 04 and take the shaft completly off. and then lock the transfercase.... You should try private messaging Mike or Spike as they would know for sure..
Good luck, Chris

Correct. Even if you were able to get the front propshaft removed from the front axle, unless you have CDL, when you go to drive away, all power from the transfer case is going to be delivered to the front (least resistance) and the rear driveshaft will not turn.
What happened to the front shaft? Did it break? If it broke, did it do any other damage as these shafts are prone to doing?

As mentioned, you do have a CDL t/case so get the front shaft off and feel about the front flange for a round plate held down with 3 bolts that has a shift nipple in the center of it. Turn it clock wise as far as it will turn and drive out carefully.
Thank you!! I cant get the front bolts off in the field. Can I put the shaft back on at the t/case and still lock out the front drive shaft with the CDL? Thanks again!!!

I took mine off without rotating shaft. 2 on the bottom and two on top. get a closed end wrench and a 3/8 socket with swivel. It took me 40 minutes to get my front shaft out. It's a pain but possible. try some PB blaster or just saw the bolts off and get new ones.
Engaging the CDL is not going to "lock out" the front drive shaft. It is going to lock the front and rear driveshafts together, essentially. Without engaging the CDL, if the front shaft is removed, only the front output on the transfer case is going to spin. With CDL engaged, both the front and rear output on the transfer case are going to turn at the same speed.
What happened to the front shaft?
