I bought and LR3 with seats that fold flat for the perfect sleeping area with a cabela's cot pad as a mattress

 

I like this set up - which I originally planned but having to take items just to cook, have crates and pull crates... it wasn't so much work but i want to minimize the work as much as possible and be organized as much as possible. So I will build something that I can slide a kitchen out and be ready within seconds to start cooking.

"The thing is a good drawer system/sleeping area can add a lot of weight. How often do you have sleep in parking lots?"
Done it multiple times because the camping area we usually go-to's are 6-10+ hours drive, and I can drive straight but sometimes its safer to take a nap. My RTT is about 170lbs lol, base on the sliding drawer that I will be building, it will be about 110LBS.

Cheap woods for mock up. I think I'm going to do edge to edge to get the most width. Make a pattern for the fender well...

Next is the 2nd platform for sleeping area.

this is my setup. 3/4in plywood for the top, side, and bottom and 2x2’s for a structural frame. The platform is 15” high to allow for plenty of storage underneath while sleeping. Not pictured, but it has a hinge where the seats fold up. The whole platform folds back in half and lays on itself. I put in some eyelets on the front of the sleeping platform and ran paracord up to the door handles with slip knots to adjust the tilt which prevents it from laying on the seats and keeps it taught. Cheap version of a temperpidic lol. Removed 3rd row seats which make for excellent open cubbies on the sides. Simple plywood slide out table on one side. Throw an air mattress on it and it’s as good as my bed at home. Plus the dog loves it. Eventually would like to add slide out drawers for easier access.

Now I understand why build this in a 3/4 plywood lol...

I tried it with 1/2" and it was a failure...

3/4 is soooooo heavy.

 

if you brace it well it will work. Run 2x2 or 1x1’s along the inner edges and it’ll prevent it from flexing

 

until I get better at this, I just used 3/4 for flooring and legs but 1/2 on top.

Next is to learn all the sliders...




This is the idea of what I'm going for but with a sleeping platform.

 

I'm still trying to learn.. Once I get to test and tune of how I really want this set up, I'll have a professional get it done nicely.
