What exactly did you weld? The sleeve are iron and the block is aluminum.

Drilled holes through the aluminum, and welded a big booger in 2 places on the outside of the sleeves. Worked like a charm.

Did you preheat the iron sleeve before welding or just have at it?

preheating an iron sleeve isn't going to help, if you plan on trying to weld aluminum to it

That's creative! A little crude maybe, but if it works in the long term, why not?

Preheating an iron sleeve will help if you want the snot to stick to the sleeve. I'm pretty clear on the aluminum part. Im wondering if you couldnt do it the other way, and drill holes, then tig the aluminum....so it held the sleeve. Either way seems like a decent homebrew fix.,,,

exactly what type of wire is going to fuse to iron and aluminium ?
to the best on "my" knowledge you can not weld iron to aluminum or the reverse,
now things may have changed in the last forty years, that's why im asking.
