Or you could put in a rebuilt 4.6 block like this and get a few extra HP.

I think you will find, you can't do a 4.6 block switch with a 3.9 cause there is no drive gear set up for the distributor.

Mike, that link is for a Disco with a distributor. It is a drop in 4.6 block that has no liners. Made for 94-95 Discovery's

Well I certainly appreciate the helpful responses. I paid $1600 for the car knowing the engine was duff so I dont want to pay several thousand for a replacement engine. I would however like to find a good used engine as I understand they are generally very rugged. This will be a vehicle I need in the mountains, probably not a daily driver.
I am aware that a 4.0 engine does not have a gear to drive the distributor but as my present engine appears to have been modified, I know it is possible. Its just a matter of replacing the camshaft with a 3.9 one and then using the front cover from a 3.9 also, for the dissie. Then it seems a spacer is needed to get the crankshaft pulley to line up with the others.

So far I have not heard any technical/strength reasons why I should hold out for the 4.0 so I will probably look for a good 3.9.

thanks guys,

Steve

If you couldcombine this block withsome sort of hi volume oil pump or even just start out & keeprunning good quality oil you'd probably have a bullet proof Rover motor here.

Yeah I haven't heard that there's any major improvement with the 4.0 either. So if you can get a 3.9 it will just be plug & play. You should be able to find a decentone for about $1000 if you shop around and can wait for the right deal.I've seen the odd one on Craigslist if you can trust the seller? I saw a completely rebuilt one for $1100. If you've got the space you could find another cheap Disco with a good engine & body damage or something? Then have one for spares? I'd like to do this myself.

Hey yeah I wanted to ask you about them okdisco. Have you ever been to their place? I did order some used parts from them and they were good to work with and cheaper than most. I was wondering if you can go there and walk around their yard and browse, or do they not letpeople in the yard? I'd like to go up there one day from Dallas for a "shopping trip". (It would be like your significant other getting to go to mall of America LOL!)Also to look around and weigh up some ideas for mods I'm thinking about.

I have tried to post a couple of times, but the DSL here keeps messing up.... I have not been, but hope to go soon. They have a shop there, and I think they will let you figure out wha you want. Not sure they will just let you walk around, though... I'll let you know after I get down there..
