These cars are truly like supermodels; fussy, tempermental and sometimes hard on the wallet, but at the end of the day it's worth it.

Please...STOP...comparing a Discovery to a jeep. a Land rover is not a jeep, your mixing apples and oranges.

gtagg,
Rachel was a prior Jeep owner, I used to be a Jeep owner, darover was a Jeep Cherokee owner and still is a TJ owner. Being that Rachel is familiar with the history of her Jeep, we are simply trying to point out the differences to here so she can make an educated decision on her purchase nothing more. You are correct these are VERY different vehicles, that's why anyone thinking about making the change should have all the facts.
That's all.

Even after you get past the first few months and fix it up, things will constantly continue to fail on it... Real huge pain in the butt.

It's worth mentioning, there are two, if not three types of Discovery models in those year ranges you listed. A 1998 is a Discovery I. The 99s on to '04 are Disco IIs. Disco I models are seemingly preferred for the real off roaders as they tend to be a bit less gadgety. The Disco IIs are larger, perhaps more complex and in my opinion need a bit more TLC and modificaitons to go off road with much vigor. In '03 the Disco IIs got a 4.6 liter engine over the pathetic 4.0 engine.

I have a 2002 Disco II. Love it. I will admit, it has less power than a Yugo, eats gas like a Sherman tank, costs a fortune to repair and off road she rattles something fierce. But, I love it. Yes, I'm an idiot to love it, but I do.

There are some common failures to watch for. I by no means know them all. I'd continue to do as much research as you can. I shopped rather hastily for mine and ended up with a $4000 repair bill on month two...and my Disco looked primo on the sale's floor. I just didn't know what to look for.

They are killer off road! If I didn't go off road in it, I wouldn't own it......at all.

I thing most people here have owned other 4X4's before our Disco's.
The thing I have found as I travel , once I get to my spot to off road I'm not wore out from the ride to get there.
I like my Disco I as it is very easy to work on.
To find a good Disco I will be very hard, good hunting.
