Hi Guys,

2002 Discovery SE with 187k on it. Started noticing this noise around 45-50mph, seems to be coming from behind the front dash. Kinda sounds like an animal scurrying around but it's not.. Can't see anything that's fallen down into the vents. Not sure what this could be. Sound is present with and without the A/C running.

Might be the fan in the instrument cluster. Air in the heater core is also a possibility.

 

Maybe a waterfall sound?

 

maybe something light fell down into the squirrel cage and is bouncing around.
does the noise stop if you turn off the climate control system?

 

That's what I first thought, but as I posted in first post, the noise is present with or without the A/C or climate control on.

 

Doesnt the flow go through the heater core regardless?

 

 

your first post said it happens with or without the a/c. i was assuming you meant that you were turning it to econ mode so that the a/c wasn't running but the fan still was. now you're confirming that you can turn the entire climate control system off and it still makes the noise? if so, that does eliminate the fan.
doesn't eliminate the heater core since that always has coolant flowing through it, but it doesn't sound like heater gurgle to me.
could be something trapped in the cabin air intake that vibrates over a particular air speed range. or a loose/broken trim piece as mentioned above.

 

 

agree, that's why I asked it...my waterfall sounded like a muffled toilet...until I bled it. Now it doesnt do it at all.
