Identify this part please???
My 2003 Disco has 215,000 miles on it and as I was driving, my temperature gauge went all the way up, but then the needle dropped almost immediately while the little red light stayed on. Then it started BILLOWING white steam. I come to a stop, pop the hood and one of two big, black, rubber hoses to the left of the radiator had broken off a part that I can't identify. Can someone help me please??

Thermostat. While you are there, just order the complete hose kit from Atlantic British (good value), and give the system a good flush. Fill it with regular green 50/50 coolant and you are set to go.
Being you don't know the part, I guessing you are not the most mechanical (not a dig, I'm just saying). To do this repair (all the hoses, t-stat, flush, fill, bleed) you do not have to be. It is easy and accessible.

Thermostat? The only reason I'm questioning is because I looked at AB and the only ones I see are plastic...this parts definitely metal or something. Is this just me not being very engine savy again? :P
Thermostat - 120% sure. Just bought one and ended up putting old one back in. Make sure you get a 180 deg. version, the one NAPA sells is 192 deg. and it made mine run up to 20 degees hotter.
It's the thermostat. You're looking at the exploded guts of yours which are metal.
That could just be how much money he has spent keeping it running... Lol
You may be better off having a shop do the work for you. While I agree that it isn't hard, it can be a pain. The trucks came with spring hose clamps that can be tough to get off and on. You will also need to bleed the coolant in the system to get all of the air out. Easier said than done most of the time. The main upper hose with the bleed valve will run you about $75 dealer price, thermostate is about $35 to $40, lower hose is about $40 there are a few others that you will want to change too. As was mentioned, AB has a good deal on a hose package. If it were me, and I was you, I would pay a shop a couple of hours of time to do the hoses, fill and bleed the coolant. At the end of the day it will probably be around $400 plus dollars, more if you do every one of the hoses in the AB kit, there are a bunch of them. Good luck, hope that it did run too long on the red or you could be looking at a head gasket job. Phil

You will then have ab out $40 in coolant and a bottle of water wetter. As was mentioned, AB has a good deal on a hose package.
