Default Ign. lock/switch replacement questions

The previous owner broke the key off in the door and his kid put one of those POS push button starters where the ignition switch is/was. The lock assm is gone and the aftermarket starter is spliced into the harness plug. So....... I went out to the salvage yards yesterday hoping to get a new lock/switch assm. No dice, all were missing keys or busted. (did score alot of trim pieces and some Disco 1 wiper arms very cheaply)
The push button starter is starting to act stupid so my question is has anyone used the standard 2 key replacement lock assm Atlantic British sells or should I track down a factory lock and fob. (can I even get salvage fob to work with my truck?? I have no idea what's involved in that process)
Thanks all for any info or advice!

If you can find a junker with parts grab:

- Ignition Switch
- Key and Fob
- Driver Door handle

Switch out the parts and swap your current fob circuit board into the new FOB

Problem is I have no fob and no keys, just a stupid "Fast n Furious" push button on the steering column. (I did have the Police run the vin prior to buying it!)

If you want a salvage fob to work on your vehicle, you'll have to get it programmed, which will either cost an arm or a leg at a dealer or take someone with a Nanocom.

If you have no fob and no keys, how do you keep yourself from getting locked out?

I installed a new ignition switch in mine as the p/o had broken it. It was pretty easy to do. I still had the the original key to use on the door though.

Any competent locksmith will be able to extract the broken key shank from the door lock and cut a new key for you.

As for the push button start, in what ways is it starting to act stupid? Another forum member had a thread a few months ago about what he installed and a few of us (me included) thought it looked pretty good.

If you want to buy a used matching set (door handle, ignition switch and keys) check with Paul Grant, Abran, Will Tillery or try eBay.

Yes, I installed the AB lock and it works great. The only disadvantage: it has no solenoid, you can pull the key in any gear shifter position. Make sure that it is in "P" like you make sure that your park brake is on when leaving the car. I carry the original key for the door just in case the fob doesn't work.

This push button starter looks like one of those 15 dollar Peebay jobs, has a round halo receiver that's layn' in the cup holder and you toss the lil' blue fob in a hit the button. All's good so far, but it won't shut it off and it just has that ghetto "pimp my ride" look to it. Last 2 times I tried to turn off the truck it wouldn't. I won't even mention the ignition wires just twisted together with some tape on them & shoved up in the dash. (Jinky wiring, one of my big pet peeves!!)
Is a factory keyless entry fob really needed?? If not I'll just get the darn AB ignition and pull the drivers door lock out and have it matched to the new ignition keys. Lastly, if I manually unlock the drivers door do all the doors automatically unlock or will I have to turn the ignition on and hit the door unlock button on the dash??? (I soooo gott'a get an owners manual)
Thanks,

I installed the push-button module that was described in the recent thread, because my lock barrel was getting really sloppy.
Two weeks ago I removed the button and went back to the lock, for several reasons:
  • the button module runs the starter for a fixed (very short) length of time, so you often have to cycle through the entire start-up process multiple times to get the truck running.
  • none of the supposed features of the system seemed to work (valet, emergency override, single-push start, etc.)
  • the independent locksmith I use, who has been able to do amazing things with other locks I've taken him, said that he was unable to re-wafer the Rover lock.
  • multiple reviews on Amazon report the button system starting to spontaneously shut down or not respond to the fob after several months, and I wasn't looking forward to that possibility.
