Ignition/Starter 95 Disco

Ignition/Starter 95 Disco
Bought my 1995 Disco new, and have taken it over hill and dale for 143K. Lot's of fun.
Last year, the ignition got wierd. Sometimes had to turn the key ten times before the starter engaged. Then it would run fine for weeks on end. had the dealer mess with it a few times, but nothing definitive. Starter and starter wiring harness were replaced months before.
Got a Hybrid in January to save gas, and didn't drive the Disco much. This month, I wanted to take her for a trip, but battery was dead. Put in new spark plugs, changed oil/filter, and charged up the battery.
Now, I am back to the possible ignition problem. Turn key, and get the little clicky sounds under the glove box, but no starter engagement. Tried turning key a bunch of times, but no action.
Wonder if putting in new ignition will do the trick, and whether I can do it myself? Doesn't look too hard---a few bolts and cables?
Trying not to spend too much on my "extra" truck, but sure do love it.
Any ideas appreciated.

RE: Ignition/Starter 95 Disco
Two things maybe wrong.
The easy one battery post are dirty, they can and docorrode between the post and terminals, just take them apart and clean.
You can get power but not the amps a starter needs.
(radio code)
The other is the starter is/has-going/gone out.

RE: Ignition/Starter 95 Disco
sounds like your starter has "hot spots". this meaning that the starter has to be jarred for it to move to a good contact point in the starter motor, or it finally gets enough juice to arc to a good contact...
buying a new starter is ideal, but you CAN repair hot spots on a starter with electrical parts cleaner, but this requires removing and disassembling the starter. disassembling it is the easy part, putting it back together is something entirely different...
good luck
