Default immobiliser turned off??? Great news!

Hi all.

Ill try and keep a long story short. My disco has had one key for the longest time. After calling various key programmers, locksmiths and the dealership I was looking in the region of $300. Flip!

I decided to go to the local locksmiths and get a plain key cut with no immobiliser just for back up (incase the Mrs locks erself out)

anyway after getting the key cut I discovered that it can in-fact start the car with no chip!!! great $8 instead of $300. I like that.

Any way can anyone tell me why or what has happened? this is great news!

I have 0 trouble codes and 0 issues with her too at the moment. its too good to be true.

I have included a picture of the new key cut for proof that there is no immobiliser chip.

Also what is the button on the side of the steering wheel? i noticed it when we first bought the car but have never wanted to press it in case it blows up!

Then i thought, Is it an immobiliser turner offer?

any thoughts, information, comments or know how would be appreciated.

cant find anything about it in rave or the manuals.

D1/D1's have never used transponder type keys with chips in them. They have built in remotes yes, but chips no.

Any plain cut key will make a D1/D2 unlock (via door lock), and start. 300.00 from the dealer is just a programmed remote/key blade. No fancy transponders.

Amazing. Thanks. I thought most or all vehicles post 2000 came with immobiliser as standard? I guess not.
Any ideas about the switch?

The switch looks like an aftermarket switch for aftermarket lights. Just a cheap rocker switch with a light that indicated when it's on

It must be redundant. I cant figure out what it turns on or off.

Just pop that lower panel off (where all your fuses are) and follow the wires. They'll likely lead past the firewall or into a relay that was cut by the previous owner.
