all good information so far, thanks. I talked to a salvage yard in UK, he's willing to send the stuff as tractor parts; which may or may not get it through customs - it IS actually tractor parts in some areas of the world.
LRNA has offered to get me a Canadian emissions certificate if I provide them with the Vin of both the donor vehicle and my LR. I did some research today and checked the EPA form, it appears that I can get an exemption under the EE classification (passes Canadian smog and not newer than 2001) - with the exemption, the letter from LR, and perhaps a bit-o-luck, I can get a 300 TDI in.
To answer the why a 300 not a TD5, electronics and EPA. Fuel line, a wire, and then it's a matter of making gauges work - and who reads gauges? (I kid)
As for Smog police, in Washington (amazingly) we have some pretty reasonable laws regarding vehicles - they take the posture that these are old cars, rarely driven, highly maintained thus the smog police pretty much don't bother. With diesels, if the vehicle is MY 2001 or older, there is no emission testing for diesels. Because these have already come in from Canada, a diesel DII is considered a factory option.... thus, no smog
To give you a hint of just how nice it is here. Cars that are 2009 or newer never will be smogged. 2008 and older, once they hit 25 years, won't be smogged either.... means that in 22 years the testing stations will be closed (and actually, they're going to be closed in 9 years)... I still don't know the people who've pushed these laws, but I honestly want to find them and worship at their feet....
