Well, after my Disco 1 has been having trouble starting I decided to push the Inertia Switch on the firewall. Now my truck will crank but not start. I unplugged the harness on the bottom then plugged it back it. It then started and then died 5 seconds later. After this a few times I unplugged the battery and then reconnected it. Started truck and it started fine. Let it run for 3 minutes then turned it off. Went to start again 30 seconds later and it would just crank.... WHat gives???

 

Has the fuel filter ever been replaced?

 

I've never done it. Ive had the truck for 5,000 miles now.

 

Its as though if I let the truck sit for a while or I disconnect the battery and then reconnect it will start fine.

 

Well the fuel system is under pressure when the key is on, if the fuel filter is clogged then not enough fuel can get to the engine, let it sit for a few min and the fuel will "seep" into the fuel rail because it is still under pressure even after you turn the key off and there will be enough fuel for it to run for a short time.
Your fuel system will hold pressure for upto 24 hours.
I would start with the fuel filter.
Replace that and see if there is a change, it is a $15 part.

If that doesn't fix it, then verify if you are getting spark and fuel and get back to us.

 

Took it to my Indy today and the truck is getting good compression in every cylinder, spark in every cylinder, but is still misfiring in #5. He thinks since the truck was sitting for a year before I bought that it is a valve sticking. Im running some LLubro Moly valve clean through it to see if it helps. Any suggestions on freeing a sticking valve?

 

What exactly does an inertia switch do?

 

I forgot to add....We also changed the crank sensor and fuel filter. It seems to run smoother and start a little easier.

I believe the Inertia switch is for if you get into an accident it cuts off the fuel supply.
