I told him that I found prices for the water pump with gasket online ranging from $35 (aftermarket on eBay) to $149 (O.E. from O'Reilly's). He told me that if I could purchase it for less than he quoted me, then do it and he would install it. So the question is....what pump should I buy, and from where, so that I can get it fast? My Disco is sitting sadly at the shop until I get the part there. It's my winter beater, so I'm not looking to put the top of the line part in it. I just want it to run. Xmas is in a couple weeks, so I can't just start dumping money into it. But yeah, instant water pump failure??? Sounds very fishy....

call lucky8 at 716-898-8153 He will have just what you need at a good price and fast shipping.

With aftermarket pumps costing 60 dollars and requiring less labor I would never have a shop replace a seal.

The seal keeps the coolant out of the bearing, the weep hole is to let you know the seal has gone bad and will soon affect the bearing.

when you say tank was dry..you you just mean the reservoir? thats not a whole lot really..

it is if it has drained down to the level of the weep hole.

I agree with that. Perhaps I misread, but I was under the impression that because the tank was dry he thought he lost a lot of coolant. I was just saying if the tank is the only measurement that isn't that much really...

It'd have to be leaking pretty bad from the weep hole to leak all the way down to it. Sounds like the tech did a bad job

I must be slow.... I cannot see the relation between the water pump and the front engine seal. one has the coolant and the other has the oil. How would that mechanic's bad installation of a front engine seal impact the water pump?

When I went back to him for warranty repair on the leaking front seal he just put in the week before, he said now my water pump has failed. so he installs a new water pump but the front engine seal still leaks a bunch. (a bunch, very technical term)

If I read what xxdoylexx says correctly then since my new front engine seal is no better than my old front engine seal (as far as leaking goes) I should plan on another water pump failure? To me that just doesn't make sense.

Oh, Maybe it was the way you worded it, or the way I skimmed. But I took that as your water pump was leaking and he tried to repair the pump by replacing its seal instead of just replacing the pump itself. Which was why I said that was stupid since the pump only costs like 60 bucks

I was busy at school so I guess I just skimmed it and missed that.
So I guess he did do a bad job replacing the seal and the water pump either just happened to go out shortly after, or he didn't properly torque the pump down or the pulley to the pump and created an angle that cause excess wear in the pump.

You essentially paid him for the labor to change it because he had to remove it to get to the seal, so it'd be wise to cough up the cost of the water pump. If he only has oem available ($120ish) and you can't deal, the aftermarket URO brand is like 57 dollars.

If he just touched this area and noted nothing, you can probably assume he caused you pump to finally kick the bucket. They don't just start blasting out the weep hole, they weep. He got something misaligned on the reinstall.

sorry for the confusion

Drowsap's point is that the timing cover seal can leak both oil and water. It's between the water pump and engine block.
