I assume it is a DI.
What grinds, the transmission or the transfer case?
Have you checked ALL of your fluids?

You really need to be more specific, sounds like you bought a Disco with few options.
When did these this fail, what have you checked so far?

Sorry. I'll try to be more specific. It doesn't do this all the time. In fact, the first time it happened for me was last night. My wife says it has happened a couple of times for her in the last week. It is a 98 Disco I, GEMS engine. I've checked the fluids and I'm not sure if its the transmission or the transfer case that grinds. To be honest with you, I'm not sure how to tell. What doesn't make sense to me is why the radio, wipers, etc... don't turn on when it's acting up. Could this be electrical? Anyway, when it happened last night, we killed the engine, i checked the transmission fluid, started it back up, and it was fine the rest of the night.

When does it happen, under what circumstance?
After driving for 8,000 hours or 10 mins, hot engine, cold engine, rain, snow, desert heat, towing trailer or picking the kids up from school?
Are you completly stopped when changing gears?
Do you park on a steep hill?
You said it is related to the wipers and lights?

Maybe your key is not springing back after you start it.

im with redhotbuzz here, you shift from park and the ignition interlock engages and gives the key a kick and it hits crank... do the radio and windows not work at all, for a second, or until you cycle the key again?

i agree with the last two posts. i spoke with Disco Mike and we ruled out the transmission. i also talked with my wife, and told her to make sure the key springs back from the start position. Haven't had any problems since. I will note that you have to help it spring back sometimes, so i ordered some new key blanks from atlanticbritish. hopefully a new key will solve that problem since the key we're using now is slightly bent.

I noticed you said you killed it, checked the tranny fluid, then started it. Tranny fluid needs to be checked with the engine running.
