Is it gear oil?

I would say rear output flange seal on the transfer case. You will need new pads for your parking brake as well. I am sure they are soaked...

Yes it is gear oil...

Rear output flange seal..

Reminds me of a the start of a very tedious problem I had with a Datsun Transmission
Though I'm sure the Landie is engineered better than the datsun..

Thanks for the input

Check D web. They have a write up for the front one, actually replacing the bearing. No too different on the rear, just add in the parking brake...

CONGRATS on the new bouncing Rover!! I bet mom is REALLY sore.

The parking brake shoes are spring loaded, so be careful when you get to the job.
The drum can be a real bugger to put back on because the shoes want to push out.

I think this is the seal...
Anything else I should be doing while im there???

I was thinking just use a bunch of BrakeKleen on the E Brake Pads...
With new ones on it would just be that much harder to get the drum back on

I had a Datsun 5 speed tranny that had an "Oil Bearing" on the far rear end of the tail piece, just before the seal..

By Oil Bearing I mean, that there was a trough that ran all the way back that picked up fluid from the front of the tranny and then dumped gear oil on and around the output shaft thereby suspending the output shaft on this bed of oil.. when the seal went bad you lost fluid fairly quickly because it was constantly being directed towards this Oil Bearing and out the back..

I tell this story because I am curious how quickly I am loosing oil from the T-Case, I know its slinging up on the undercarriage while I drive, and I can just smell the scent of gear oil on muffler after the 8 mile trip to work, but I just need to have an Idea of how fast the thing is loosing oil...

Also should I replace the Rubber Flex U joint on the back, as I am going to probably have to remove the driveshaft when I replace the seal..

Your mileage isn't bad, but given the age, it wouldn't hurt. It is about $100 for the flex coupler, so it depends on your budget. You can also get a new driveshaft and change it over to full u-joints. The 97's up on the D1 had full u-joints. They went back to the roto flex with the D2's.
