When coming to a stop from any speed, shortly after applying the brake the steering wheel starts to jerk rapidly from left to right. I have replaced the steering stabilzer, checked the tires for uneven ware, cleaned any dried mud from inside of wheels and checked all tie rods for tight fit. Anyone have another possible source to check?

It has to be something in the steering system. There have been other posts related to this problem and it seems to be fairly common (at some point). I don't recall anyone ever really posting what exactly it is. I guess your just gonna have to take another look and really grab your steering linkages and tighten all the bolts. Try grabbin a buddy, get the rover up on all fours, put it in gear andslowly hitthe brakes and watch the steering system. Be safe and use jackstands. It should really vibrate because it wont have the resistance of the road. Then maybe you can pinpoint where the problem lies. Either way don't drive it anymore until you have it fixed cause it could become unexpectadly worse! Again, just be careful.

 

Does the brake pedal pulsate at all?

 

Probably an easier way would be to just jack the front end up, use jackstands, have a buddy move the steering wheel back and forth and look for play.

 

I agree with where you are going... Sounds like warped rotors... At least that is the experience I have had with other disc brake vehicles.

 

I would lean towards warped rotors also.

I have repaired a wheel jerking issue under brake application by replacing the flexible brake line to that wheel with a braided stainless steel line. That was on an old Corvette though - these Landys are a bit more peculiar

 

I would never repace one brake line with stainless, that could make the situation worse or create a new one entirely. This does sound like warped rotors, they are relatively cheap.

 

Zero, how are your tires? Disco tends to shake front end upon initial application of brakes from higher speed when the tires are worn out, or when they are badlycupped. Yes, there could be other secondary problem, as warped rotors, but,bad tire condition does magnify the shake.[sm=smiley23.gif]
