Just bought 2004 DII - High Mileage
I just bought a 2004 DII with 171k on the ticker. This was a one owner driven on cross country trips and looks like a brand new vehicle (seriously looks like it has less than 15k on it). This was serviced at all intervals at a land rover dealer and eventuly traded in for a new vehicle. By looking at it I still cannot believe it has 171k on it as it is that perfect. I think for what I paid even if it need to do an engine swap eventually it was worth it. I am wondering what is the average mileage expected to get out of one of these. I do know that it had a head gasket job at 120k or so but this does not put me at ease by any means. Also curious if there is a diesel swap that can be done with relitive ease(yea right). I am located in CO and will need this to be reliable as this is my vehicle for winter as my daily driver is rear wheel drive and horrible in the snow.

IF you keep on with the correct service intervals and take care of that rig you are looking at 300k easy
also a diesel swap will run you more then the vehicle is worth to do properly

I am in Arvada, I just sold my Pinzgauer and needed somthing I could drive that made more sense(practical). I am in the market for a defender but thought I could mess around with the Disco for a while. I used to own a 96 disco I and really liked it but it left my wife and i stranded a few times.
You're just right down the road from me. I live in Broomfield and work in Boulder.
I've always wanted a Defender...but, since they stopped making them for the US in 97, the prices are just too high for me. Maybe some day.
Disco Mike and other heavy hitters on the forum are great at answering any specific questions you have about your 04 Disco.
Man, I can hardly believe the miles you have on her, but I'm sure that you will get many more with all of the proper maintenance.

I alomost questioned it myself. That is over 34k per year, unbelieveable! I am just hoping for the best. It drives like a new car but everytime I look at the spedometer I get this "could break anytime" feeling. I have been reading a few forums of motor swaps and am kind of thinking that if things go aray that I could swap out with a SB 350. I am very mechanicly inclined and dont think this would be horibly difficult with the proper adaptors.LOL. The CO group should get together for an adult beverage and talk somtime.
I know this sounds silly...but, check to make sure that your odometer is set to miles instead of kilometers.
I test drove a Disco II last year that had "122xxx miles" on it, when it actually had 76,xxx miles. They apparently didn't notice the "km" on the odo.

That is funny you say that because that happened with my Jaguar. I noticed that it was incorrect and set to KM during my test drive and made the purchase immediatly. Upon the dealer writing down the actual mileage on his documents they noticed it was set to KM and just about flipped out that they sold me the car so cheap when actually it was way less mileage then they thought. I had already paid cash so the deal was done but you should have seen the look on there faces. I just acted as if it was no big deal but I was laughing inside. Unfortunatly it is set to MI not KM.
These engines are just as reliable as a 350.
If you wanted to drop a 350 into the truck you would need to switch to HD springs and shocks because a Disco engine only weighs nothing (its ALL aluminum were the 350 is cast iron block and aluminum heads)
This truck will last you forever as long as you continue to use premium gas and follow the service intervals in the owners handbook.
