Default Key broken in ignition 2004 D2

Hello. I have 1 key for my 2004 Disco 2 and the key broke in the ignition

The top half is still in the ignition and I can still start the car.

Should I fish out the half from the ignition (and therefore not be able to start the car anymore) then take it to a locksmith / key cutting place to make a new one from the 2 halves? Will the new key work? Or does the car need to be with it to program it?

Another option might be if I remove the ignition and take the whole thing to a locksmith and they will be able to make a key / program it then?

Just unsure of my options and what I should do in this situation so looking for some guidance! Thank you

A good locksmith should be able to cut you a new one from the broken piece, but don’t take it to any old hardware store. You can also separate your metal key from the Fob. The new key blank doesn’t need to come with a Fob, your old one will work fine without any reprogramming.

I suggest having a mobile locksmith take care of it wherever your truck is now. A good mobile locksmith should be able to extract the broken key and cut a new one for you on site. While he’s at it, have him make two copies! No programming is required for a plain key. The truck needs to be programmed to recognize a different fob, but a plain key for our trucks has no RF chip in it like more modern cars.
